U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced a sweeping new package of economic sanctions against Iran on Monday, describing the measures as an 'economic onslaught' designed to sever the country's global financial connections. Dubbed 'Operation Economic Outcast,' the initiative aims to isolate the Iranian government by cutting off every revenue stream that sustains what Bessent called a 'tyrannical regime.' The ultimate goal, he stated, is to leave Tehran without allies or financial lifelines on the world stage.

The Treasury Department outlined a broad expansion of its sanctions targets, moving beyond businesses to include entire sectors such as digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and shipping. Authorities say they have meticulously mapped out networks of brokers, shell companies, and shadow fleet vessels operating across the UAE, Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Switzerland, and Europe. These networks are alleged to transport Iranian oil and funnel the resulting revenue to Iran's Revolutionary Guard and other regime-linked entities.

The Trump administration has branded the initiative as 'D-Day' for the Iranian economy, though unlike the historic military landing, this campaign gives nations time to adjust their behavior before facing serious consequences. President Trump is reportedly making direct phone calls to world leaders, requesting that they cease dealings with Tehran. Bessent indicated that countries engaged in commerce with Iran would be given an opportunity to change course, though he declined to specify any concrete deadlines for compliance.

China remains the central unspoken concern of the sanctions campaign. As Iran's largest oil customer, purchasing roughly 90% of Iranian oil exports, Beijing occupies a critical position in Tehran's economic survival. Bessent notably avoided naming China in his opening remarks, but when pressed by reporters about whether Chinese banks could be targeted, he warned that 'no one is above the reach of U.S. sanctions,' signaling that secondary sanctions against Chinese entities remain a live possibility.

Some analysts have raised doubts about the real-world effectiveness of fresh sanctions, given that the U.S. already maintains extensive restrictions on Iran, some dating back nearly 50 years. Additional penalties imposed as recently as June targeted entities helping Iran evade existing measures. A monthslong naval blockade has further restricted the flow of goods into the country. Observers note that the new push appears focused less on individual businesses and more on pressuring sovereign governments that host Iran-supporting networks.

Chinese e-commerce giant AliExpress has been caught using covert browser fingerprinting techniques, including one that exploits inaudible audio signals to identify and track visitors. Researcher Matthew Callaghan discovered the tracking accidentally when he noticed that loading the AliExpress homepage caused audio from his phone to stop playing through his Bluetooth multipoint headphones. After investigating the pattern — audio cut out every time the site loaded and resumed when the tab was closed — he found two heavily obfuscated tracking scripts embedded in the site.

The scripts functioned by exploiting the WebAudio API to generate a sawtooth wave — a type of waveform commonly found in digital audio output. An oscillator produced a known waveform, and an analyser then measured how the browser processed the signal, reading the resulting frequency data. Because different combinations of CPUs, operating systems, and math libraries process audio in subtly different ways, the resulting 'audio fingerprint' was once highly unique across devices, providing a reliable method for identifying individual browsers without using cookies.

Critically, the scripts set the audio gain to zero, meaning users could not actually hear anything. However, because the audio graph remained connected to the system's audio output, the browser continued processing the signal in the background and transmitted the resulting data to AliExpress. This explains why Callaghan's headphones were triggered: even though no audible sound was produced, the browser was actively processing audio, causing the headphones to switch audio sources as if sound were playing.

Modern browsers have largely neutralized this particular fingerprinting technique. Firefox addressed it starting with version 118 in 2023, switching to its own internal math libraries rather than those provided by the operating system, which drastically reduced the uniqueness of audio signatures. Chrome and likely Safari are also unaffected because they too ship with their own dedicated audio libraries. The technique is therefore considered obsolete, raising questions about why AliExpress continues to deploy it at all.

The most probable explanation is that the audio fingerprinting script is a legacy remnant that has simply gone unnoticed. More concerning is that AliExpress was found to be using over a dozen other fingerprinting methods simultaneously. While it is reassuring that browser developers have built defenses against some techniques, the broader picture is troubling: thousands of websites are likely employing similar multi-layered tracking, and browser developers face an ongoing battle to detect and counter new fingerprinting methods as they emerge.
